Tutor Profile

First things first, hello and welcome to guitar school.  My name is Mark Ellwood, guitar tutor and founder of ‘guitar school’.

I have been obsessed with music of all types all of my life, and decided to try and make some of my own by buying a guitar when I was 7 years old.  Of course I couldn’t play a thing, but that’s where years of frustrating yet rewarding and enjoyable years of learning came in.  At the time I couldn’t afford any lessons so I taught myself, hard as this sounds, when you are obsessed that much with music that you have to be able to play a  song or chord, and then you learn, and learn I did.  I have been self-taught all of my life, which has given me an amazing ear for music and good sound.

As my love for the guitar grew, so did my collection with them!  I would never sell one, as they each have there own sound.  As well as a growing collection of guitars I added to this other musical equipment which inspired me to write my own songs.  Nothing that will rocket in to the charts, but that is not what I believe writing music is about.  It should be something that has a meaning to you.  And if it reminds you of that memory or feeling when you hear it then it is successful. I believe that you should be able to learn the style of music that you want when you have music lessons, not what the tutor finds it easiest to do.  This is why clients pick the style that they are keen to learn, with specific songs in mind if they choose.  Or they can do a bit of everything, or if you want to have a noticeable qualification, then I can work you through your RGT exams.  The RGT stands for the Registry of Guitar Tutors and is a national recognized qualification which also carries UCAS points that can lead to university entry.  They where established in 1992 with the aims of improving the quality of guitar education.  The exams that they offer are done through the London College of Music, and range from preliminary then 1-8, 1 being the first through to 8 that is for the advanced guitarist. These are available in guitar and bass.  There is a link on this site for more information on the RGT. Guitar School now boasts a 100% pass rate in these exams!

I am available for Session, Recording, writing, Teaching in schools, Music in hospitals/care homes etc, Workshops and all other aspects of work within the music industry, so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in contact with me.

FUTURE PLANS

Although already having recording facilities, I hope to extend the home studio to provide a recording service for bands and move into other aspects of tuition including piano and vocal.
